I want to draw your attention to some recent changes in the way urgent referrals are made to our Unit.
We want to improve our service to the acute medical departments of our regional hospitals.
We have recently undertaken a process of audit and evaluation of the urgent service that we provide.
We found that the main sources of frustration in the process of referring a patient to our service were:
Limited availability of the on-call SpR via the bleep-and-refer system,
poor communication and,
poor documentation of any advice or management plan.
We have now adopted a new referral system to ease the frustrating process that you and your teams have previously encountered.
